For a luxury hotel complex in Columbia County, three villa types were developed to respond to existing site conditions and produce a variety of accommodations for guests. While the property’s extant structures can accommodate thirteen rooms, the majority of rooms across the property are hosted in 16 of the site’s new structures. These new buildings are all formal variations on a U-shape, with specific differences reinforcing different priorities for each.
The villas, each with their own form and relationship to the site walls, create a ring of lodgings around the central garden.
‘Stargazers’ span over the wall, and contain roof decks for sky watching on the darkest part of the site.
‘Garden Cabins’ look out into the garden, punching through the walls.
‘Cloisters’ are an inward-facing riad-type structure tucked behind the wall. Each type has its own planting material palette composed of local flora, adding further definition to each experience
